Chart of EU region areas

The chart above shows the area of each of the EU regions.  Unlike population distribution and economic might, the land that the four major regions of the Union take up is relatively equal.

Findings

  • The difference between the largest region, Western Europe, and the smallest, Northern Europe, is 548,992 square kilometers (211,967 square miles).
  • The largest region, is 1.66 times larger than the smallest region.
  • The difference between the largest and smallest regions amounts to 66% of the smallest region's area and 40% of the largest region's area.
  • Each smaller region is at least 80% of the next larger region.

Caveats

  • EU data is from 2007.
  • The area includes both land and water area.

Details

Even if the United Kingdom is not included, Western Europe would still be the largest region at 1,137,295 square kilometers (439,112 square miles).  However, it would be almost equal to Eastern Europe's area.

The largest country in each region takes up a good chunk of the area of the region.  Sweden takes up 54% of Northern Europe, Spain takes up 49% of Southern Europe, France takes up 40% of Western Europe, and Poland takes up 28% of Eastern Europe.
