The chart above shows the number of passengers that traveled by air for every resident in each EU and US region. The Northern EU is the only region in both superstates to have more than four air travelers for every resident in the region.
Findings
- The difference between the region with the greatest number of per capita air travelers, the Northern EU, and the region with the least, the Eastern EU, is 3.34.
- The Northern EU has 3.90 times the number of air travelers that the Eastern EU does.
- The difference between the EU region with the greatest number of air travelers, the Northern EU, and the US region with the greatest, the Western US, is 0.75.
- The Northern EU has 1.20 times the number of air travelers that the Western US does.
- Every single state in the Northern EU has more passengers per capita than every single state in the Eastern EU and every single state in the Northeastern US.
- The Northern, Southern, and Western EU and the Western US all have more air passengers per capita than each individual state in the Eastern EU and every single state in the Northeastern US.
- The Southern US has more air passengers per capita than each individual state in the Northeastern US.

- The Western EU consists of Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
- The Southern US consists of Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and West Virginia.
- The Northeastern US consists of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Delaware, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
- The Midwestern US consists of Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
- The Eastern EU consists of Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
Details
Although the Western EU has the most air travelers by far, it ranks fourth when population is taken into account. The Northern EU, which in this metric is first, ranks eighth out of eight when it comes to total air travelers.
The Eastern EU is the only region in the EU with states that have less air passengers than residents. In contrast, every single US region contains states with less air passengers than residents.
