US States by Number of Subway Stations

The chart above shows the number of subway stations in each state.  New York has more subway stations than the next five states combined.

Findings

• The difference between the state with the most subway stations, New York, and the state with the least (that has a subway system), Maryland, is 444 stations.
• New York has 32.71 times the subway stations that Maryland does.
• Pennsylvania and California have two subway systems, New York has three, all other states have one.

Caveats

• Data is from 2017.
• Hawaii is currently working on building a subway system for Honolulu which is slated to have 21 stations.
• All figures are rounded to the nearest hundredth.

Details

New York accounts for nearly half of all subway stations in the country at 46.40%.  It, with Illinois make up almost two-thirds of the subway stations in the country at 61.09%.

New York has three heavy rail systems all in the city of New York.  The New York City Subway has 424 stations, the Staten Island Railway has 21, and PATH has 13.  California has BART in San Francisco with 45 stations and Metro Rail in Los Angeles with 16.  Pennsylvania has two systems in Philadelphia.  SEPTA has 75 stations and the PATCO Speedline has 13.
