Per Capita GDP by EU State, First Quarter 2020

The chart above shows the per capita annualized nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in each EU state as of the first quarter of 2020 in euros, the change from the previous quarter, and the GDP one year prior.  Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, and Poland were the only states to see a gain in per capita GDP both over the previous quarter and over the previous year.

Findings

• The difference between the state with the largest per capita GDP, Luxembourg, and the state with the smallest, Bulgaria, is €115,251.55 (down from €117,955.23 last quarter and up from €112,311.32 last year).  Luxembourg and Bulgaria had the largest and smallest per capita GDP respectively both last quarter and last year.
• Luxembourg has 14.70 times the per capita GDP that Bulgaria does.  The ratio of largest per capita GDP to smallest per capita GDP was down from 15.08 last quarter and down from 14.78 last year.
• The median per capita GDP in the 28 EU states is €25,982.32 (down from €26,647.50 last quarter and down from €26,122.89 last year) and the mean €33,278.75 (down from €33,879.07 the previous quarter and up from €32,960.55 last year).
• Five states saw their per capita GDP rise in current euros from the previous quarter while 23 states saw their per capita GDP drop.
• Sixteen states saw their per capita GDP rise in current euros from last year while 12 states saw their per capita GDP drop.

Caveats

• GDP data is from the first quarter of 2019, the fourth quarter of 2019, and the first quarter of 2020.
• Census data is from 2011.
• The data is seasonally adjusted in current euros.
• The data is annualized by multiplying the quarterly figure by four.
• All figures are rounded to the nearest hundredth.

Details

In absolute terms, Luxembourg had the worst performance over the previous quarter with a drop of €2,664.11.  Ireland had the best performance with a gain of €1,161.18.  Year over year, Italy had the worst performance with a drop of €1,385.58 while Ireland had the best performance with a gain of €4,525.26.

In relative terms, Italy had the worst performance over the previous quarter with a 5.16% drop in per capita GDP while Ireland had the best performance with a 1.50% rise in per capita GDP.  Year over year, Italy had the worst performance with a 4.61% drop in per capita GDP while Ireland had the best performance with a 6.10% rise in per capita GDP.

The number of states with a per capita GDP of over €75,000 was one last year, two the previous quarter, and two this past quarter.  Conversely, the number of states with a per capita GDP of less than €20,000 was ten last year, nine the previous quarter, and ten this past quarter.

Germany (went from 9th highest per capita GDP to 8th highest), Cyprus (from 15th to 14th), Czechia (from 18th to 17th), and Poland (from 25th to 24th) each surpassed one state over the previous quarter.  On the flip side, Belgium (from 8th to 9th), Spain (from 14th to 15th), Estonia (from 17th to 18th), and Hungary (from 24th to 25th) were each bested by one state over the quarter.  Year over year, Cyprus (15th to 14th), Czechia (from 18th to 17th), and Poland (from 25th to 24th) each rose one spot.  Conversely, Spain (14th to 15th), Estonia (from 17th to 18th), and Hungary (from 24th to 25th) were each bested by one state from the previous year.
