The chart above shows the annualized nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in each EU and US region as of the fourth quarter of 2019 in millions of dollars, the change from the previous quarter, and the GDP one year prior. The Western EU is the only EU region that has a larger GDP than any US region.

Only four states in both the EU and the US (three of which are from the EU) have an annualized GDP of over $2 trillion.

Czechia, the Netherlands, and Poland are the only EU states with an unemployment rate below three percent. Fourteen US states have a rate below three percent.

All negative growth rates in the EU are attributed to currency rate fluctuations.

Currency rate fluctuations have not been kind to EU states over the past five years as most US states' per capita GDP zoomed past the per capita GDP of most EU states.
